Drink to Your Health: 3 Ways Wine is Suprisingly Good for You

At this point, most of us have already heard at least a little bit about the wine-y wonder that is resveratrol. The highly prized antioxidant is found in the skins of red grapes and, not surprisingly then, in red wine as well. Studies have linked the consumption of resveratrol, either via grapes and wine or supplements, with a whole host of benefits ranging from lower cholesterol to a decreased risk of cancer to protection against Alzheimer’s.

Now, though, there’s new research out indicating that drinking can actually help you live longer. From an article at My Domaine:

Curtis Ellison, MD, a professor of medicine and public health at Boston University asserts that, “the data is very clear that one of the best predictors of longevity is moderate drinking.” He cites that in almost every epidemiologic study, participants who consume alcohol in moderation live a little longer than their non-drinking counterparts.

Sounds like a good deal to us. The article also discusses a link between red wine and a cure for the common cold:

2002 study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that drinking eight to 14 glasses of red wine per week correlated with as much as a 60% reduction in the risk of developing a cold.

It’s worth noting that resveratrol is also found in peanuts and berries, but if we’re going to live longer and suffer from fewer colds, we’ll be using that extra time and energy to drink wine, not shell nuts. But that’ s just us…
