Wine of the day – Pike Road

The problem with tasting and drinking as much wine as I do – other than the standard issues like becoming faster, stronger, more attractive, and impervious to insult – is that I get full of myself, arrogant, and susceptible to knowitallism. I sometimes think I can’t be surprised. Yeah, the more I know, the more stupid I become.

That said, let me discuss my latest Wine Of The Day that not only surprised me, but stunned me, impressed me, and made me realize that I simply don’t know anything. That is such a freeing experience.

Today’s WOTD comes from Pike Road in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Their Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are made from 100% Willamette Valley fruit, are stunningly delicious, and come at an incredible value, about $15 and $20 respectively. Pike Road is owned and operated by Pat and Joe Campbell, who have over 40 years experience in Willamette Valley, and it shows with these new offerings.

Both these wines definitely land squarely in the ???  Date Night Wine category on my soon to be totally famous Wine Rating System.

I started with their 2015 Pinot Gris – A very crisp and refreshing wine. They cold ferment in stainless steel so the citrus, tropical, and stone fruit flavors just pops out of the glass. It’s hot out today, and this is the perfect wine for sitting out on the porch and watching the sun set.

Next came the 2014 Pinot Noir – French oak-aged, subtile and elegant. To me, this is what Pinot Noir is supposed to be – a little bit of old-world style with new world accents – not too rich and not too concentrated, simply a perfect mix of dark berry and cocoa, paired with soft acidity and very mellow tannins. 2014 is considered by many to be one of the best Willamette Valley Pinot Noir vintages, and by the taste of this, I can’t disagree.

Pike Road wines are are excellent and I will make sure to have some on hand. I suggest you do the same. They are easily some of the best examples of why you shouldn’t judging a wine by it’s screw-cap.
