Why Americans don’t drink their share of wine. Globally, in per capita wine consumption, the United States ranks 39th — one spot behind Bulgaria, and barely ahead of Macedonia, Belarus and Albania (40, 41 and 42). We trail Iceland, for crying out loud, and Canada and Estonia

We have some catching up…so get to it and start searching out American wine producers. The U.S. produces some of the finest wine in the world and they want to cater to you..they want you to drink their wine.

Globally, in per capita wine consumption, the United States ranks 39th — one spot behind Bulgaria, and barely ahead of Macedonia, Belarus and Albania (40, 41 and 42). We trail Iceland, for crying out loud, and Canada and Estonia (34, 33 and 32). Surprisingly we’re ahead of Kazakhstan (53), because have you seen the way Borat chugs wine?

While the U.S. ranks 4th in wine production we are 39th in per capita consumption, of wine.

Only France, Italy and Spain produce more wine than we do. There are no real surprises in the rest of the top 10 either (Argentina, China, Australia, Chile, South Africa, Germany). China is relatively new to winemaking, but when they set their minds to something, they tend to get results. If you think about it, it’s not all that unusual for something to be made in China. Why not wine?
The global wine production list’s 11th through 19th spots are occupied by well-known winemaking countries — Portugal, Austria, Greece, Hungary, New Zealand — and this makes the low wine consumption rate in the U.S. only more interesting.

In other words, most countries are ranked where we expect them to be. Of the top 25 per capita consumption countries, about half are known for winemaking, and most of the rest either have lesser-known winemaking traditions or are relatively close to famous winemaking countries.
